WORKSHOP | LA | DAY 1

Last week I had the ultimate pleasure of traveling to Los Angeles, California to teach my first ever out-of-state, open registration Lettering | Calligraphy workshop. Not only was I lucky enough to have a reason to fly out to the west coast, but the event was even hosted by my amazingly stylish gal pals over at Sugar Paper. Talk about a win/win. Here's a peek into day one of the workshop...

For those of you who aren't familiar with my design past, I was originally introduced into the calligraphy world by way of Sugar Paper about 3-4 years ago while working at their beautiful little boutique in Century City. While there, I fell in love with the work of their calligrapher, Lisa Holtzman, and immediately looked into expanding my then limited illustration skills.

Years passed, I moved back to Michigan, and I still kept on practicing and practicing. Over the years, I've often kept in touch with the ladies of SP and you can even see some of my hand lettering throughout their product designs in addition to their original Martha Stewart Weddings design

Needless to say, when planning my LA workshop, I of course wanted to teach at their swanky new studio space in West LA.

When entering the studio, students were greeted by the strong smell of ink and oiled up antique letterpress machinery. After passing through the pressroom swinging doors, bright colors and patterns mixed with chic, antique farmhouse inspired decor mark the staple "Sugar Paper" style. How about those pink chairs?!

Hands down, one of the best spaces to work in.

On day one of the workshop, we covered the basics (and more advanced techniques) of pointed pen, modern calligraphy. My workshop structure tends to differ a bit from other workshops as it's an all-day, intensive look at the art of calligraphy. My goal is to have everyone leaving with a solid understanding of calligraphy and the skills to solve technical problems on their own once they return home and start their own calligraphy endeavors.

Throughout the day, I was able to continually walk around and indivually help each student with their work. Because the class is for all levels, I'll often get a wide array of women and men coming in who need help with their skills in different ways. This class was filled with a bunch of rockstars. Let me tell you. So much talent in one room!

I even had the pleasure of working with a few advanced students who had taken Maybelle Imasa-Stukuls' Los Angeles class a few weeks prior.
